Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in aging men. This walnut-sized gland, situated below the bladder, produces semen. While the enlargement isn’t cancerous, it can lead to urinary symptoms by squeezing the urethra, causing issues with urination.
Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as an enlarged prostate. BPH is a common condition among aging men and can lead to bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) such as increased frequency of urination, urgency, weak stream, and difficulty initiating urination.
Here’s an overview of Prostate Artery Embolization:
Before undergoing PAE, a patient is typically evaluated through a combination of medical history, physical examination, and imaging studies (such as ultrasound, MRI, or CT scans) to assess the size and anatomy of the prostate.
The patient is prepared for the procedure by administering a local anesthetic, and intravenous (IV) sedation may be used to keep the patient comfortable.
A catheter is inserted into the femoral artery to access the blood vessels that supply the prostate. This is done using fluoroscopy (real-time X-ray guidance).
Tiny particles (usually microspheres or embolic agents) are injected through the catheter and directed into the small blood vessels (arteries) that supply the prostate. These particles block blood flow to specific areas of the prostate, leading to a reduction in its size.
After the embolization is complete, the catheter is removed, and the patient is observed for a period to ensure there are no complications.
